Abstract: This volume continues the annual survey conducted by the Council and examines compensation levels for 35 distinct positions, and employee benefits practices using a survey of 850 foundations and corporate giving programs with paid staff. Data was provided through questionnaires returned by funders. Tables present salary data by grantmaker type, asset level, and region. Also gives gender and race/ethnicity breakdowns, information on issues specific to chief executive officers, and data on increases, bonuses, and salary ranges. Benefits information includes data on practices such as paid leave, retirement plans, and benefits for part-time or retired staff as well as domestic partners. Tables are indexed.

11.   Borochoff, Daniel. "Debunking charity myths : underpaying may harm programs". AIP Charity Rating Guide & Watchdog Report vol. 50 (December 2008) p. 2, 22-3.

Abstract: The author argues that by offering salaries that are too low, charities are driving away qualified job candidates. In addition, some charities unwittingly waste large amounts of money continually hiring and training new employees that cannot be retained under such inadequate salaries. The author also asserts that salaries should not be perceived as an overhead expense, but as a program expense.

Abstract: This research study examines job quality in the human services field, focusing on compensation and benefits among assistants in Wisconsin nursing homes. The authors' hypotheses propose that public and nonprofit nursing homes provide superior employee benefits over their for-profit peers, chain affiliation leads to a decline in the quality of benefits, and professionalized leadership is associated with improved job benefits.

Abstract: Nonprofits experienced higher program, fundraising, and administrative expenses in 2007. The rise in expenses is attributed to the 14 percent minimum wage hike, increasing energy costs, and high fundraising costs, among other factors. Many large organizations felt an especially strong impact, with expenses jumping as much as 40 percent.
