Abstract: Patrick J. McGovern Jr., founder and chairman of International Data Group, and his wife, Lore Harp McGovern, chairman of the Board of Associates at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, have pledged an estimated $350 million to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for brain research, to be donated over the next 20 years to create the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. The donation is the largest ever made directly to a higher education institution since 1967.

Abstract: Mr. and Mrs. James and Virginia Stowers, both of whom have had cancer, have founded the Stowers Institute for Medical Research, which will focus on cancer research. They have also created the Stowers Institute for Resource Development, which will solicit funds for the research institute.
